…the Important Guy

This past week we overhear the conversation between Jesus and Nicodemus. The exchange reveals Christ’s offer of new life and of how God’s Kingdom is a present day reality and not merely a future hope. Nicodemus, an important religious figure, held large stakes in the established order of religion, the same order that Jesus was taking swings at. Nic’s world was beginning to spin…

We also unpacked the idea that this new life causes us to be dependent on God and others, and pulls the plug on our own self sufficiency. Thus, what is important to God (new life, kingdom now) becomes important to us; and what’s important to others (fill in the blank!) becomes important to us as individuals and as the church. It knits us together and brings us out of darkness and into light

Notable quotes…

“Prosperity knits a man to the world. He feels that he is ‘finding his place in it’, while really it is finding its place in him”
(C.S. Lewis)

“…If we are to really hear the Gospel, it will be because we overhear it spoken to someone else and realize indirectly that what is being said powerfully relates to us and what is going on in our own lives.” (Kierkegaard)
